A notification for the snow forecast at your resorts

Create a powder alert for one of your French ski resorts: when the fresh snow forecast for today, tomorrow or the day after reaches your threshold, between 10 and 60 cm, Alpow sends a notification to your iPhone. It is a snow forecast for the resort, not a measurement and not a road warning.

A forecast, not a measurement

The alert is based on the forecast Alpow computes for each resort from four weather models: Météo-France's AROME and ARPEGE, ECMWF's IFS and DWD's ICON. What actually falls may differ. It does not measure snow on the ground, says nothing about the state of the pistes, and does not cover roads.

How it is triggered

  • Threshold: 20 cm by default, adjustable from 10 to 60 cm in 5 cm steps, resort by resort.
  • Window: fresh snow forecast for a single day: today, tomorrow or the day after.
  • Once: one notification per resort and per forecast snow day.
  • Never at night: nothing is sent between 10 pm and 7 am (French time). If the forecast still reaches your threshold, the notification is sent after 7 am.
  • What it says: the amount, the day, the resort and the Powder score, in the form "Powder on the way! 25 cm expected tomorrow at Val Thorens. Powder score: 4.2/5." (made-up example).
  • Actions: "View resort" opens its page, "Report snow" opens a snow report.

Creating and adjusting an alert

  1. Add the resort to your favourites with the star on its page.
  2. Tap the bell on the resort page, or open Me › Powder alerts › Add an alert.
  3. Allow notifications when iOS asks.
  4. In Me › Powder alerts, set the "From … cm of fresh snow" threshold. Swipe an alert left to delete it.

Your alerts are kept on your iPhone; Alpow's server receives the list of resorts and thresholds with the device's notification address, so it knows what to send. See the privacy policy.

The limits of the Powder score

The Powder score, from 0 to 5, sums up the snow quality expected at the resort. It depends on forecast fresh snow, rain, wind and temperature; a confidence level next to it shows whether the models agree. It does not take avalanche danger into account: a high Powder score is not a green light. For avalanche danger, read the official avalanche bulletin, which you can also get as an avalanche bulletin notification.
